     COMPUSERVE EXTENDS INFORMATION SUPERHIGHWAY WITH
         ENHANCED INTERNET ACCESS

COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 8, 1994 -- CompuServe Incorporated, the leading
worldwide provider of online information services to personal computer
users, today announced plans for a series of Internet-related
enhancements to benefit members of the CompuServe Information Service.
Beginning in late March, CompuServe members will be able to access
the CompuServe Information Service directly from the Internet using the
telnet protocol. Members may access using the CompuServe Information
Manager (CIM) user interface or any general communications software.
Telnet access will eliminate the need for a separate modem connection
and, for some members, the need to dial long distance to reach the
CompuServe network. CompuServe will provide free online membership
sign-up for non-members who access via telnet.
Rates for accessing CompuServe through telnet will be the same as
dial-up rates via the CompuServe network. CompuServe members pay $8.95
per month for unlimited connect-time access to more than 60 basic
services. Rates to access extended (hourly-priced) services are $4.80/hour
at 1200 or 2400 bits per second, and $9.60/hour at 9.6 or 14.4 kilobits per
second.
Through the rest of 1994, CompuServe will introduce access to a
variety of Internet resources, including the popular Internet USENET
Newsgroups, remote log-in to Internet hosts and file transfer from
Internet archive sites. Rates have yet to be determined, and CompuServe
is developing an easy-to-use interface for CompuServe members who are
not Internet experts.
"CompuServe was a pioneer in providing an email link with the
Internet, and now we're pleased to announce expanded Internet access
capabilities for our members worldwide," said Rob Mainor, CompuServe
vice president of business information and electronic communications.
"There are many support and ease-of-use challenges associated with
implementing an effective Internet access strategy. We have made
significant advances in these areas, and feel that our plans reflect the
needs and interests of our wide variety of members."
CompuServe has also established an Internet Forum for members to
share ideas about how to access and make use of the many resources
offered on the Internet. The forum has an area for members to provide
input to CompuServe as the company prepares additional Internet-related
services.
For additional information or to join CompuServe, call 800/621-1253
(outside the U.S., call 614/529-1349) or send electronic mail to
SALES@CIS.COMPUSERVE.COM.
Established in 1979, CompuServe provides its worldwide membership
of more than 1.7 million with databases and services to meet both
business and personal interests.
In addition to the CompuServe Information Service, CompuServe
Incorporated provides frame relay, wide and local area networking
services, electronic mail, business information services and software to
major corporations and government agencies worldwide.
CompuServe is an H&R Block (NYSE:HRB) company.

                         Questions & Answers
Regarding CompuServe's Announcement Of Internet Services
                            March 15, 1994

CompuServe has recently announced availability of the Internet Forum, beta
test of a gateway from the Internet to the Information Service, and plans
to release additional Internet-related services during 1994. This document
contains the answers to the following questions about this announcement:

Q 1: Why is this announcement significant?
Q 2: What does the inbound gateway from Internet to the CompuServe Information
Service (CIS) mean to our members?
Q 3: Why would Internet users pay for access to CIS? Isn't information on
the Internet free?
Q 4: Can non-members learn about and subscribe to CIS through the Internet?
Q 5: Can customers in special markets, such as those served by CompuServe's
Business Services Group (BSG), use the new gateway from the Internet to
CIS?
Q 6: When will the inbound gateway from the Internet to CIS be available
for members? Can members help test the gateway now?
Q 7: When will CIS members be able to access Internet services like
newsgroups and FTP?
Q 8: At what speeds may members access CIS through the Internet?
Q 9: Can members download files from CIS through the inbound Internet gateway?
Q 10: Can CIM connect to CIS through the Internet?
Q 11: Is there any security risk associated with our connection to the
Internet?

    **********************************************************************

Q 1: Why is this announcement significant?

A: This announcment constitutes CompuServe's first public announcement
specifically dealing with our Internet direction. This will enable
CompuServe to ride the strong wave of current media interest in the
Internet, and demonstrate that CompuServe is moving forward in addressing
new information technologies.

Q 2: What does the inbound gateway from Internet to CIS mean to our
members?

Our new gateway will provide many members more convenient and economical
access to CIS. Some members will gain access from work, such as those who
do not have a modem but instead are connected to the Internet. Some
members who are not close to a CompuServe network node will save long
distance telephone and supplemental network charges, which will be
especially beneficial from college campuses and overseas locations which
already have an Internet connection.

Q 3: Why would Internet users pay for access to CIS? Isn't information on
the Internet free?

A: The common misconception that the Internet is free arises from the fact
that often the connection is provided by employers and schools. In reality,
Internet connections are purchased from various access providers who charge
either a flat monthly fee or a fee based on usage. Once connected to the
Internet, there are also charges for many information services such as
Dialog and ClariNet. Of course, there are also many information sources on
the Internet which may be accessed without charge. However, the better
sources among those which are free are heavily visited and can be very
slow. Many Internet users will consider CompuServe's fees very reasonable
for access to the high quality, well organized information service which
has made CIS the worldwide leader.

**Rates for accessing CompuServe through telnet will be the same as
dial-up rates via the CompuServe network. CompuServe members pay $8.95
per month for unlimited connect-time access to more than 60 basic
services. Rates to access extended (hourly-priced) services are $4.80/hour
at 1200 or 2400 bits per second, and $9.60/hour at 9.6 or 14.4 kilobits per
second.

Q 4: Can non-members learn about and subscribe to CIS through the Internet?

A: Prospective members who connect to CompuServe.com are presented a menu of
informational articles about CompuServe, including instructions for
becoming a member. Upon request these articles are sent to the prospective
member via Internet email. Included is the Signup User ID and Password as
well as a special Serial Number and Agreement Number that allow Internet
users to instantly become CIS members. There is no initial usage credit
associated with these signups, and as usual, the initial password will be
valid only for a limited time until the permanent password is sent through
the mail.

Q 5: Can customers in special markets, such as those served by CompuServe's
Business Services Group (BSG), use the new gateway from the Internet to
CIS?

A: CompuServe's BSG customers who access services by logging into CIS will
gain all of the benefits being offered to CIS users. BSG customers who use
special customized services which are not based on CIS membership will not
be able to log on through the Internet gateway.

Q 6: When will the inbound gateway from the Internet to CIS be available
for members? Can members help test the gateway now?

A: We expect to complete testing and release the service by the end of
March. Interested members should watch the forums with particularly strong
Internet discussions (i.e. INETFORUM, TELECOM, VAX, UNIX, etc.) where we
will announce and request assistance with the final test phase.

Q 7: When will CIS members be able to access Internet services like
newsgroups and FTP?

A: We are not releasing any additional details about our plans for outbound
access from CIS to the Internet other than the statements in the news
release. Please watch What's New where we will announce services as they
become available.

Q 8: At what speeds may members access CIS through the Internet?

A: CompuServe's gateway from the Internet to CIS matches throughput to one
of our valid baud rates. At logon, the user specifies the desired rate,
which also determines the price charged for use of Extended Services or
under the Alternate Pricing Plan. Currently we allow access up to 9600 bps,
and plan to offer 14400 bps once we successfully handle enough production
traffic to prove the stability of the gateway under actual customer loading
conditions.

Q 9: Can members download files from CIS through the inbound Internet
gateway?

A: Files may be downloaded from CIS through the inbound Internet gateway.
However, before doing so, you should disable the telnet escape sequence. The
appropriate command depends on your telnet software, usually a configuration
option to disable the escape character. Many telnet implementations use
- -e "", so the command reads "telnet -e"" CompuServe.com". Contact your local
System Administrator to find out how to disable the escape character at your
site.

Whatever the command needed in your instance, this is required to establish an
8 bit data path. Another requirement for downloading files is software which
supports one of CompuServe's download protocols, such as B-protocol, X modem,
Y modem, or Z modem. Few versions of "telnet" currently have this support,
however, many users are able to connect using terminal emulation software like
CIM, PC3, or Procomm through their telnet connection.

Q 10: Can CIM connect to CIS through the Internet?

A: The initial release offers access in ASCII mode, and the next versions
of WinCIM and MacCIM will explicitly support Internet access. The currently
released versions of CIM can theoretically be configured for TCP/IP access
by using various operating system "tools" and "drivers" (Macintosh and
Windows, respectively). However, significant technical expertise is
required, and it may be impossible with some configurations. Until new
versions of MacCIM and WinCIM are released, we are publicly offering ASCII
service only. We are also collecting information from internal and external
testers which will be posted in the Internet forum to help answer questions
from the technically adventurous who wish to attempt access with current
versions.

Q 11: Is there any security risk associated with our connection to the
Internet?

A: CompuServe member accounts, as well as all internal development accounts
and machines, are secure from attack. Precautions have been taken to prevent
the possibility of a cracker breaking into CompuServe via any network,
including the Internet.

However, members who use the Internet to connect to CompuServe send their
password as part of the login activity. This information may be compromised
when it is routed across the interconnected networks that make up the
Internet. This is currently an issue being faced by similar technologies
such as cable, as well. CompuServe can not ensure that adequate security
precautions are implemented on any of these external nodes. Therefore, we
recommend even more frequent password changes for these members. With
release of the inbound connection from Internet to CIS, a higher portion of
our users will employ these less secure links. We warn them of the
additional security risk during their first connection from the Internet.

CompuServe realizes that allowing access to/from the Internet poses
additional risks. We are developing ways that sensitive information, such
as passwords and credit card numbers, may be encrypted or coded for
transmission cross the Internet. As always, CompuServe will continue to add
valuable additional services for our members to maintain and strengthen our
information service leadership.
