慶大の三平です。
昨日「inetd がエラーを吐いて Gopher のサービスを中止する」件で質問し
たものです。
まだ対策をとって試したわけではありませんが、解決したと思われますので、
簡単なまとめを流したいと思います。
情報を送っていただいたみなさんありがとうございます。また、個別にはお
礼のメールをおくりません。御了承ください。

1 問題:
Gopher ver.1.12S を運用しているのですが、集中的に Gopher Server にア
クセスをかけたところ以下のメッセージを吐いて inetd が Gopherd を起動
するサービスを中止してしまいました。
>Apr dd hh:mm:ss gopher.server inetd[187]: gopher/tcp server failing (looping),
service terminated
KILL -HUP 187 と inetd に HUP を送るとサービスを再開してくれました。
2 この問題がおこる環境:
Sun SparcStation 2 + Sun OS 4.1.2、多分 BSD 系で inetd を用いている
所
3 原因:

CERN httpdのマニュアルよる (/hypertext/WWW/Daemon/Bugs.html)

つまり、inetd は同じクライアントホストから毎分 40 回以上のア
クセスがあった場合、そのポートへのサービスを中止するようです。
4 対策:
a) inetd を使わず Gopher Server を deamon としていつも動かす。(この
ことを standalone というのが適切なのか不明ですが、httpd だとその
ようです)
b) そのような集中アクセスを行わないようにクライアントソフトを変更す
る。
c) 10 分ぐらい経てばサービスを再開するので、無視をする。
d) Sun のパッチをサーバマシンの OS に当てる(patch number 100178-08)

結局対策の b) あたりを行い、解決したいと思います。これは veronica-JP
は、日本国内のサーバにアクセスするので、サーバ側の対策では解決しない
ためです。

ぶー。。。2.3 の BSDI 用バイナリを昨日作ったばっかなのに。。。。

恐らくこれが原因でしょう. 4.4bsd のソースでもこのようなコードにな
っていました.
やはりスタンドアローンで動かすのが一番の解決法ではないかと思いま
す.

NCSA Mosaic for X の 2.4 が出ました。
私は、アナウンスもされてないのに、バグ入りの2.3を持って行ってしまった
慌て者の2135人の内の一人のため(^_^;)、2.4のL10N化は、ほぼ終っています。
今、別方面からHZ-encodingの拡張があるのでそれを入れてちょ、という要請
を受けており、この作業のため、ちょっと遅れるかもしれませんが、それでも、
2-3日中には2.4用のパッチを出せると思います。
個人的な忙しさおよび環境の変化等々より、L10Nのパッチを出すのを長いこと
サボっていましたが、もうしばしお待ち下さい。どうもすみません。

It is with great embarrassment that I offer my apologies to the 2135
people who downloaded Mosaic 2.3 before I withdrew it. In my rush to
get out a version that fixed the telnet URL security problem, I left in
an ugly flaw that caused Widget names to appear to the right of all
toggle buttons in all forms. I'm very sorry for all the inconvenience
this may have caused. I am now releasing Mosaic 2.4, which is identical
to 2.3 with the exception of fixing that one foolish oversight.

NCSA Mosaic for X 2.4 is now available.

o Binaries for SunOS 4.1.3, Solaris 2.3 (a.k.a. SunOS 5.3),
AIX 3.2.4 with X11R5, IRIX 4.x, IRIX 5.1.x,
DEC Alpha (OSF/1), DEC Ultrix, and HP/UX 9.x (700-series) in
/Mosaic/Mosaic-binaries.
NOTE: Binaries and source are now compressed with gnu zip to save
space on our overloaded ftp server.

o 2 color images go to black & white on monochrome, instead of dithering.

o New menu under "Options" to always request enrypted if PEM_AUTH defined.
